Meet the Parents! Six Families Celebrate the Many Joyful Ways We Come Together PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANNIE LEIBOVITZ - VOGUE, May 2022
“Casey Legler wears many hats—writer, restaurateur, model, and former Olympic swimmer—but these days, Legler is firmly in expecting-parent mode. Their wife, reproductive rights advocate Siri May, is pregnant with the couple’s first child, and due any minute. Legler and May, however, don’t see this as the start of their family, but rather an extension of it.
“Our version of family included the two of us as friends and then later as a couple, but also a network of people we love dearly. We call it both a logical and biological family,” says Legler. “As for kids, neither of us seriously wanted children until we started dating and could imagine raising a kid together for the first time in our lives—that realization was one of the manifestations of our love.”
And while it can be hard for the couple to find time to unwind (particularly while welcoming a first pregnancy during an ongoing pandemic while splitting their time between New York and New England while also having hard conversations about everything from the climate crisis to what Legler describes as “pervasive racism and misogyny”), they work hard to prioritize self-care for their growing family—which, according to Legler, looks something like this: “Music playing in the background, dancing together in the kitchen while we cook a meal together, reading the latest London Review of Books to each other, one leaning against the kitchen counter while the other stirs something delicious in our big old cast-iron pot.” Pretty dreamy, no?”—E.S. for VOGUE
